BROWARD WOMEN’S ALLIANCE FOUNDATION
Scholarship for the Advancement of Women
The Broward Women’s Alliance Scholarship was created in 1997 to benefit women who need support to advance their personal and professional goals through achieving a higher education degree. Over the years, that purpose has not changed., but the status of the BWA has. In 2019, we became a non-profit foundation.
Broward Women’s Alliance Foundation
The BWA Foundation, Inc is a registered non-profit in the State of Florida. Because the BWA Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, if you choose to make a charitable gift to the scholarship fund, it will be 100 percent deductible. We hope you will join us in supporting the outstanding women who have received scholarships through the BWA Foundation.
We are so proud of the success our recipients have achieved after receiving a scholarship from the BWA Foundation. Below is the story of just one of these recipients.
This year one of our students. who received our scholarship her junior and senior years, graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a double major in Asian Studies and Global Leadership. She is the first of our graduates to be awarded a Fulbright to study abroad. In addition, for the last two years, she was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship through the Bureau of Educational Cultural Affairs to study abroad in South Korea. Less than 10 percent of the students who apply for this award receive it. She plans to continue her education after completing her Fulbright.
Distribution of Awards
The scholarship program is open to applicants each year from mid-January to mid-April. Scholarship recipients are notified in early May. Not all of our applicants receive a scholarship the first time they apply, so we encourage applicants not to lose heart and re-apply the following year. Each year we award no less than five $1,000 scholarships. Last year we were able to double that number. Scholarship funds are applicable to tuition and fees only which are paid directly by the foundation to the higher education institution.
Candidates who have chosen an education path to achieve economic independence and leadership in their chosen field should apply. The rating criteria include: academic achievement, financial need, extra-curricular/community involvement, and work experience.
