BROWARD WOMEN’S ALLIANCE FOUNDATION
Scholarship for the Advancement of Women
Originally established in 1997, the Broward Women’s Alliance Scholarship was created to benefit women who need support to advance their personal and professional goals through achieving a higher education degree. Over the years, that purpose has not changed., but the status of the BWA has changed for the better.
Broward Women’s Alliance Foundation
We are now the BWA Foundation, Inc. - a registered non-profit in the State of Florida. Because the BWA Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, if you choose to make a charitable gift to the scholarship fund, it will be 100 percent deductible. We hope you will join us in supporting the outstanding women who have received scholarships through the BWA Foundation.
We are so proud of the success our recipients have achieved after receiving a scholarship from the BWA Foundation. Below are three examples of how these women are leading productive and rewarding lives.
In her mid-fifties, this applicant was widowed four years ago, and is raising an autistic son on her own. She received her high school degree through the GED program. She decided to go to Florida Atlantic University for her master’s degree to increase her value in the job market. She maintains a 4.0 GPA. She has volunteered at the Pace Center for Girls, been a member of the Pompano Beach High School Booster Club where she assisted with fundraising efforts and has co-curated two community-based art exhibits.
Another of our award recipients is attending the Studio School (formerly the Relativity school) in Los Angeles. She is our first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree student. She writes: “…As you know, I am currently a freshmen commercial dance major. Since being at school, I have been hired to dance in a professional music video, performed my first professional show, made the Dean’s List and have had the opportunity to be on 13 different sets. In addition, I have two major talent agency auditions coming up next month.”
Our third recipient has received our scholarship for the past three years. In 2016, she graduated summa cum laude from FAU as she approached her 50th birthday. She continued her education, and graduated with a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York. Her specialty is broadcast journalism, and, she earned honors in both her video and audio production classes, and has published print articles including one that appeared on the Op-ed page of the Sun Sentinel. She plans to pursue a career in audio journalism, which is the nation’s fastest-growing news platform.
Distribution of Awards
The scholarship program is open to applicants each year from mid-January to mid-April. Scholarship recipients are notified in early May. Not all of our applicants receive a scholarship the first time they apply, so we encourage applicants not to lose heart and re-apply the following year. Each year we award no less than five $1,000 scholarships. Last year we were able to double that number. Scholarship funds are applicable to tuition and fees only which are paid directly by the foundation to the higher education institution.
Candidates who have chosen a specific educational path to assist them in achieving economic self-sufficiency, economic independence and participation in their chosen field should apply. Among the criteria used to rate the candidates are: academic achievement, financial need, extra-curricular/community involvement, and work experience.
