April 2015

Welcome

Dear Members:

Usually, by this time in the school year (because my life operated on a July to June timeline) I am starting to get “winded” both physically and intellectually. So, I look forward to the arrival of Spring as an opportunity to renew my energy and enthusiasm for family, friends and BWA. This year, your board has been working on strengthening the organizational framework on which BWA operates.

One of our largest endeavors is the development of a new website. I am excited to tell you that we are dangerously close to rolling out the new site. BUT, before we can do that, we need your help. If you have a high quality camera, and can bring it to the next meeting, we need mucho pictures to add to our photo gallery. The pictures that are in our current site are old and some of are of such poor quality that they won’t transfer well. Also, if you have some general photos of our community (or community events that our members are involved in) that we can post on our site, that would be appreciated as well.

One Saturday night a few months ago, I was invited to a showing at the “Girls Club.” It was an awesome experience to see young and old artists talking to each other about their art. And, I was thrilled to learn that the space is also an after school hang out for young women. Sarah Michelle Rupert will speak to us about the “Girls’ Club,” a non-profit alternative art space located in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  It is also the only private collection open to the public that focuses on art by women. Their current exhibit is, "The Moment. The Backdrop, The Persona." What a treasure, located close to downtown and yet hidden away.

The mission of the Girls’ Club is perfect for BWA, because we are all about supporting women’s accomplishments as well.  And speaking of that…  As we wind down our fund raising season, we will continue to have one activity at each meeting such as passing the scholarship box during announcements, raffles or 50-50s to collect funds. We hope to give out 6 scholarships this year, each $1500, for a total of $9,000. If you would like to make a donation directly, please know that you can donate through our website using your credit card. We are working towards mobile banking at our meetings, but we’re not there yet. But, we hope to be doing so in the future.

Sincerely,

Merrie
