January 2015

Welcome

Dear Fellow BWAers;

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. Whether you spent time with family, friends, in self-reflection or a combination of all three, I hope you are refreshed. For 2015, our programs will focus on some of the exciting programs and projects in place in our area. First up is Mr. Kent George. He is the director of the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Mr. George will bring us an update on the new runway and what it means for our local economy.

January also brings with it the beginning of our scholarship committee’s efforts to identify deserving women who can benefit from assistance.  Thanks to Tracey Carroll who raffled a significant array of personal services from her shop to raise money for the scholarship fund. In addition, congratulations and thanks to everyone who purchased tickets for the pick-a-prize program ta December’s meeting.

Our dessert sponsorship program will return in January after taking a December hiatus. Three wonderful members have agreed to take the first three months. Each dessert sponsor gets a mention in the newsletter, and a 3-5 minute opportunity to provide her fellow members with information about her organization or a project that the organization is supporting in the community. If you would like information about sponsoring a dessert at an upcoming meeting, please see Debbie Hartman or me.

Happy New Year, and Happy New Day. See you at the January meeting!

Merrie

This from Jill Beach - Our amazing VITAS Broward family donated many blankets and gently used warm clothing to the Hope South Florida’s shared meal program. In a matter of three weeks, we collected many bags of employee donations from boxes placed in our break rooms. Hope South Florida provides meals at area churches and as we have had some cold spells, they asked for warm clothes and blankets to give the homeless of Broward who come for the shared meals.

Duree Ross announces the following: Recognition for excellence in PR by fellow leading PR professionals is quite an honor. They know their stuff, and they know something great when they see it. So when we at South Florida PR firm Durée & Company found out that we are finalists for two 2015 Gold Coast PR Council(GCPRC) Bernays Awards, which recognize outstanding PR performance and campaigns, we were thrilled.

In fact, this is the third consecutive year that our firm has been a finalist (we’ve won the past two years) for the esteemed awards, presented by members of the GCPRC, South Florida’s largest independent organization of PR & marketing professionals. The 2015 awards will honor PR efforts which took place between Dec. 1, 2013 and Nov. 30, 2014. This year, we’re finalists in the two following categories:

“PR Campaign by a Small Company or Firm” for our work with Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science (formerly Miami Science Museum). We’ve created new buzz about the current 65-year-old Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, while there is much public anticipation of the new, state-of-the art museum facility opening in 2016 in downtown Miami.

“Nonprofit/Charity Project or Campaign – Small” for our work with Coral Springs Museum of Art. Among our many accomplishments was repositioning the museum from being a local arts museum to a regional digital arts/modern art attraction.

We’ll find out how we did on Friday, Jan. 30 at the 11th Annual Bernays Awards Luncheon at Boca Dunes Golf & Country Club. As finalists for our work with two amazing South Florida museums, we’ll be very proud to be there, among some of South Florida’s most prominent PR and marketing professionals.
