What we want is often right in front of us, but frequently we are too busy focusing on other matters to really notice.  That is the lesson that I learned from our last luncheon.   The ability to cherish the small details in life, to spend time getting to know each other and simply have a low key conversation about topics that interests us.   Last month BWA's Mothers & Mentors program was designed to give everyone an opportunity to interact with each other.  So many of you approached me after the lunch expressing how pleased you were with the program and with your ability to get to know your BWA sisters; an ability that is usually hampered by the hustle and bustle of the lunch programs, the self introductions and what ever else may be taking place.   Big thank you to Janet Ehrlich for spearheading this wonderful program and we look forward to hosting many more of these, getting to know what each of us does,  and strengthening our BWA bond.   After all, in order to promote and support each other, we need to understand what each one of us can bring to the table.  

I look forward to seeing everyone on May 12th during our next luncheon.  Our speaker is Cindy Kent with the Sun Sentinel.   Please join me on Monday to welcome her.

Also, hard to believe that my term is ending, but I am happy to report that next month we will present you with the 2014-2015 BWA Slate of Officers for your consideration.  Ellen Schulman and the nomination committee did a great job at presenting a slate to the board and we appreciate their help.  Please be on the look out for the email from BWA presenting the 2014-2015 BWA Slate, as everyone will need to vote during our June meeting.

Next month we are honored to have Lori Parrish as our speaker.  She is dynamic and we are thankful to have her as our guest. 

On the scholarship front, we received over 25 applications for the BWA Scholarship and are excited to present the recipients during our June 9th lunch.

Meeting Information/Speaker

Cindy Kent started her journalism career at the Miami Herald; working as a copy girl, the weather clerk on the copy desk, in the composing room and the art department.  But it was her stint on the business desk where she truly learned her craft. After spending a few years at the Newspaper Association of America she rejoined newsroom life at the Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale in 1996, and has been there since.

Cindy’s weekly business profiles highlight people and the jobs they do. She profiles local businesses, and offers tips and resources for readers. Another one of Cindy’s responsibilities is the paper’s online and print business calendar. Because social business networking is a huge factor in a small business owner's success, the calendar has a big readership. She also highlights these business events as online briefs that link readers back to the online calendar for more information and more events. She sees the information about upcoming event or newly announced personnel promotions (in the People on the move column) as telling the story about the community’s economic engine.

Your registration is very important to provide an accurate count.

If you attend without registering OR you register and do not attend, you will be charged a fee.

If you must cancel after Friday,  May 9th or, if you have questions about registration you must contact Debbi Hartman at or 954-483-3060.

Members, please remember that registration requires an RSVP. No shows (You or your guests) will be charged. Late registrations will be charged. If you are bringing a guest it is your responsibility to insure that their luncheon is paid for (either by you or by the guest).

The value of membership in BWA extends beyond lunch and a speaker. As a returning member, you recognize the value of the relationships you renew and those you create with other like-minded women who are the leaders in Broward County. You also recognize the importance of contributing to the academic development of other aspiring women through our Scholarship Program.

We value your membership and the time you take from your busy schedule to join us at our monthly meetings. We’re committed to making those meetings meaningful to you.

Remember, if you have an event to promote, please bring materials and place them on the registration table to share. Self-introductions have been trimmed down to better accommodate speakers.

Member News

.       The Lighthouse of Broward has been selected to work with the National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) of the National Eye Institute to work on creating Spanish language video profiles similar to those currently on their website at  They are also adapting their Living with Low Vision: What You Should Know booklet into Spanish.  Two Hispanic clients of the Lighthouse will be the key individuals featured in the video.

.       The Lighthouse of Broward’s second annual gourmet dining experience, Dining in the Dark, will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six.  Last year’s sold out attendees are still raving about it.  For info call Elly du Pré at 954-463-4217 ext 114 or Tranique Merritt at ext 115.
