April 2014

Welcome

In anticipation of our Mothers and Mentors lunch, I read about one of our members who attended a recent presentation where she asked the participants in the audience to list on a sheet of paper:the 5 richest people in the world, last year’s Miss America, at least 5 Nobel Prize winners, and to name 5 performers that have received an Oscar as best actors/actresses.After waiting a while and seeing the puzzled look in the audience, she asked them how it was going, they looked up, and shared, almost in unison, that they were having a difficult time remembering the names. Shethen told them not to worry, that they were not losing their memory skills – reality is that most of us just “forget” those types of details as the years go by.The applause stops, the trophies get dusty, the winners are forgotten.

She then asked them to write down the following: the names of 3 of their best teachers or professors and of 3 friends who have seen them through a difficult time. Then, she asked them to list the names of 3 people who have made them feel special and 3 people with whom they like to spend time.

How do you think they responded? Of course, much, much better! The puzzled looks disappeared and they all began to frantically write in their otherwise almost blank piece of paper.

People who leave an imprint in our lives are not those who have received awards or are rich and famous. But those who care about us, mentor us and take care of us – they somehow make us feel that they are always “on our side” and remind us that we are special.

Since the theme of our BWA meeting this month is “mentoring”, I ask you to reflect a minute or two on WHO are these people in your lives. While you are thinking about it, also think about in whose list YOU are likely to appear.

As for me, I thank You for being in my list and for making a difference for BWA and for our community.

See you on Monday at the Tower Club for our monthly luncheon!
